The Enneagram doesn't put you in a box. It shows you the one you've been living in.
The Enneagram is a system of nine personality types, each defined not by what you do but by why you do it. Your fears, your motivations, your default responses under pressure, the story you tell yourself when things go sideways. Nine different operating systems. Nine different sets of blind spots.
It is not a box. It is a mirror.
And for leaders especially, it is one of the most useful tools I have ever encountered, because it explains the gap between your intentions and your impact, which is the gap where most conflict lives.
I learned I was an Enneagram 8 in 2017. My first reaction was that someone had been reading my mind. My second was that I wanted to apologize to a long list of people.
Here is what I did not fully understand until then: I thought I was sharing facts. Other people were experiencing me as blunt or rude. I could tell my delivery was not landing, but I did not understand why, and I had no framework for fixing what I could not see.
The Enneagram gave me that framework.
It also gave me a new way to understand my husband Joe. He is a 5. Fives need time to think, time alone, and they need to know something is grounded in solid information before they commit. I am an 8. I can make two or three decisions while he is still deciding whether the first one was built on enough facts. Neither of us was doing anything wrong. We were just running on completely different operating systems, and we had no idea.
That kind of clarity does not fix everything. But it makes a lot of things make sense that did not before.
Free assessments are a good entry point. They are not a verdict and they are not always accurate, but they can point you in the right direction.

One honest note: mistyping is common, especially on your first pass. Most people land on two or three possibilities before something clicks. That is completely normal, and it is part of why a conversation with someone who knows the system well is worth having.
